Well, the wait for the super electric Tesla Roadster is coming to an end soon. The company, which operates out of San Carlos, said it will be releasing the speedy rockets in October or November.

The cars, already popular with celebrities like George Clooney and Arnold Schwarzenegger, will debut in two new showrooms in Menlo Park and Los Angeles. The Menlo Park showroom will occupy an old Chevrolet dealership on El Camino Real. There’s a metaphor there somewhere.

Tesla’s said it’s already pre-sold about 570 cars at a base price of $98,000. Customers will be getting a speedster that will race from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds with a range of more than 200 miles on a single charge.

The car is getting looks not only for its performance but because it’s creating serious momentum for electric vehicles, once given up for dead but now enjoying a slow resurgence. The Tesla Roadster will be able to recharged in about 3 1/2 hours using a simple household outlet.

Tesla has already secured $105 million in funders, including, PayPal founder Elon Musk. Next up for Tesla is a five-passenger sedan called the White Star that could debut as early as 2010 at around $50,000 or more.

According to Tesla Motors CEO and co-founder Martin Eberhard, the new all-electric Tesla Roadster will be hitting the streets late this year, likely in October or November. The initial plan for a summer release had to be moved back a bit due to a change in suppliers for the transmission.

The Roadster runs completely on electricity and can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4 seconds. It can also go as far as 200 miles on a single charge from a standard household outlet, likely depending on how you drive it. The electric two-seater is being built by Lotus Engineering and will initially be sold in the US which seems to be turning out alright for the company. So far 570 cars have been pre-sold without ever even trying them out. Those with their names already on a Tesla Roadster include Arnold Schwarzenegger and George Clooney.

The electric Tesla pricing starts at $98,000 and the company plans to make 1,000 2008 models.
